Teen Creates Business While Tackling Social Issues
“Julian Prolman grew up in Marin (California) believing he could make a difference in the world. Now, he’s doing it.
Prolman, 19, is the founder of a business called Ministry of Tomorrow, an organization aimed at promoting the environment and improving conditions for people around the world.
Prolman, who graduated from High School in 2006, spent the summer on an 80,000-acre wildlife sanctuary in Kenya, where a 25-employee factory in a small village is producing his T-shirts with social and environmental messages.
The first shipment to America contained 200 T-shirts with various environmental messages, including one titled “Peace.” At the bottom of the shirt were the words, “It’s About Time.”
“There are so many superficial things in the world, but this was real,” Julian said. “It will give jobs to people, including providing rangers who will help keep poachers from the elephant population. There are so many issues that affect us on this planet.”
Prolman said he hopes to expand the clothing line. He plans on returning next summer for another phase of his project, bringing films to the children of Africa. He has called that program Filamu, which means film in Swahili.
“He really got in there and saw what it takes to make one of his products,” Korchinsky said. “Rarely do we see someone make the investment of visiting the factory to see first-hand how things work. To see a 19-year-old do it was rather refreshing.”
