“On Monday, Car Toys will announce a partnership with Waltham, Mass., startup Second Rotation Inc., which buys and sells old electronic items.
Under the partnership, Car Toys clerks will assess the condition of a customer’s old cell phone, GPS unit, digital camera, camcorder or MP3 player. They can then tell the customer what Second Rotation will pay for the item.
If the customer wants to sell the old device, Second Rotation sends out a prepaid shipping carton, arranges for the item to be picked up and pays the customer by check or PayPal within a week. Items must be in the condition described, and only functional items are accepted, Second Rotation President Israel Ganot said.
Second Rotation pays 60 percent to 80 percent of what eBay auctions for the same item have recently fetched. It then sells the item itself, keeping the difference.
Second Rotation plans similar partnerships with other retailers and, in time, will let retailers instantly issue gift cards — redeemable only at that store — for the value of the customer’s old item.”
