Entrepreneur Balances Diverse Interests — Franchise Operations and Music
While Dan Mellott, 31, is wrapping an antique piece of china to ship across the world, he might be thinking about his music.
Mellott, who owns two area UPS Stores, also is lead singer of Browntown.
“I’m a man of tangents, I bounce around a lot,” he said. “I may be overnighting a china set for Grandma and bubble wrapping plates, and I may be thinking of a song in the back of my mind.”
Mellott, who is known by the nickname Puma D by most outside of work, said he has played music since grade school in Bonner Springs, Kan. He and bass player Brian Mikuls, Greenwood, Mo., learned guitar together in Mellott’s garage, and Mellott and guitar player Brandon Gerken, Bonner Springs, Kan., performed in a rap group in high school. Mellott bought into a Mail Boxes Etc. store in Lawrence after graduating from KU. Then he bought a store on the Country Club Plaza. Four years ago, he bought the Brookside store and eventually all his stores converted from Mail Boxes Etc. after UPS purchased the company…
